Places to visit in France besides Paris?

My husband and I are heading to France (and Italy) in Sept and we're after some suggestions for places to visit in France. We've already been to Paris, Versailles, Nice and Monaco. We're heading back to Paris but not really interested in going back to the French Riviera. What are must see towns and villages or regions in France? We're interested in seeing some beautiful villages and chateaus and drinking wine and eating great food. Picturesque scenery would be great and we're thinking about hiring a car. We'll probably only have about 2 weeks in France. Any suggestions? We're in our early 30s. Thanks!
